General Information
Ruputer was officially launched on the 8th of April, 1998 by SII. There were 2 models of Ruputer wristwatch - Ruputer (Model MP110) and Ruputer Pro (Model MP120). And the only difference between them is the amount of flash disk space - Ruputer Pro got more space. The watch has 128Kb of RAM and 512Kb (Ruputer)/2Mb (Ruputer Pro) of flash memory (for storing the files). The amount of ROM is 512Kb. It is used for Kanji character set, operating system, etc. The LCD screen is dot-matrix and has 102x64 pixels resolution. The PC communication is executed via PC docking station and the speed of data transferring is 19,200 bits per second. Plus the watch can 'talk' to another Ruputer or computer via infra-red 'eye' with the speed of 38,400 bits per second (to Ruputer) and 19,200 bits per second (to PC). The power source is two CR2025 type batteries. The 'heart' of Ruputer is 16-bit processor - MN10200 by Matsushita Electronics Corporation. And its clock frequency is 1.82Mhz.

On the 14th of October, 1998, SII released the new model of Ruputer wristwatch - Ruputer Pro4 (Model MP140). This time the flash memory capacity is doubled to 4Mb. Plus some more case and band styles were presented.

On the 10th of December, 1998, SII released new series of Ruputer Pro watch (2Mb) - Ruputer ProS. The main difference between original Pro and ProS is that Ruputer ProS goes without docking station. The need of uploading the new files to the watch was smartly solved by SII - they established a special place in Tokyo called SII Data Station, where owners of Ruputer ProS series can upload the newest applications. Official site offers the schedule which shows the new releases which may be uploaded at SII Data Station. Ruputer ProS comes in two styles - silver and black. Also, ProS line got new stylish bands. There is a big number of applications were pre-installed on Ruputer ProS. They include well-known original and home-grown applications and games. The big advantage of ProS series is that they are quite cheap in comparison with Ruputer Pro.

Starting from the 12th of November, 1999, Matsucom sells the watch based on Ruputer architecture under onHand name. It is oriented on American and European markets. It has almost the same technical specifications as original Ruputer but there is only 2Mb model in two color styles (no 512Kb and 4Mb versions). The processor speed is 3.64Mhz. The speed of data transferring is 38,400 bits per second. Japanese GUI was replaced with English one which has some extra functions. PC software for the watch was updated, too.

Getting Started
First of all, if you press MENU button in Filer (graphic interface of the file system), Japanese menu will appear. To completely understand all its entries you should download Ruputer system menu translation from the Files/Images section. This picture shows the translations of every point of system menu.

Ruputer PC Application which goes on CD-ROM in the package doesn't work on non-Japanese Windows. But most programs of onHand PC Application are compatible with Ruputer, so they may be used instead of Ruputer PC Application. All sorts of operations like copying, moving, deleting, formatting can be performed from PC Filer, the general program of onHand PC Application. You can download this software suite from the Files/PC Files section.

After understanding the functions of onHand PC Application, you can perform the format of Ruputer flash disk. It helps to clean up unuseful stuff and free up some memory. To format the disk, in PC Filer, choose onHand/Format onHand memory...; under format options choose Full Format and press 'Start' button. This action will take some minutes. The next step should be scanning flash memory for errors. To complete that, choose onHand/Check onHand memory..., then press 'Start/Resume' button. Then, if the message 'No error was detected.' appeared, everything is alright.

After formatting you will find out that all directories and files, except SYSTEM/SYSTEM.INI, disappeared from Ruputer flash disk. Now it's time to bring back the needed files. Download Ruputer back-up archive from the Files/Ruputer Files section which contains back-up data (all the files of SYSTEM directory and its subdirectories, plus some other files which were originally installed on Ruputer).

Before uploading all the back-up stuff to your Ruputer, you can decide which files are not needed to you. The following description will help.

Description of the back-up files:

* - you must not delete this file.

SYSTEM/MMP/
*INITIAL.MMP - Graphic file which is displayed after reset was performed.
NOTE: To use your own graphic file instead of SII original one, you should place your own .MMP file to this directory and rename it to INITIAL.MMP. If there is no INITIAL.MMP file in SYSTEM/MMP/ directory, the default image with button layout scheme is shown.

After installing Ruputer original files, you should edit your FILER.INI file to delete the extensions you don't use, add new extensions or associate some extensions with other applications. To complete this mission you should install Ruputer application called FILER.INI Editor. It allows to edit FILER.INI file right on your wrist. The interface is very friendly. You can download it here:

Bullet FILER.INI Editor (It allows to edit FILER.INI file right on Ruputer. Has very friendly interface).

Ruputer Graphics
Ruputer LCD screen has 102x64 pixels resolution. And of course, 2 colors - black and white. 102x64 is not really enough for a good image but anyway it is a progress for a wristwatch. The format of Ruputer images is .MMP, which stands for mono-map. It is possible to view images larger than 102x64 pixels on Ruputer. The maximum resolution allowed for .MMP file is 320x240 pixels. You can scroll large images by using the joystick.

If you want to view images larger than 320x240, you can view PC .BMP files directly on your Ruputer. And .BMP image can have any resolution but it must be monochrome. You must install BMPViewer application on Ruputer flash disk, then associate .BMP extension with it by using previously described FILER.INI Editor application (see Getting Started section). BMPViewer can be obtained from this location:

Bullet BMPViewer (View PC .BMP files with any resolution right on your Ruputer).
NOTE: After loading .BMP file on Ruputer, it will not appear immediately, just wait some seconds and it will come up. Scrolling an image with joystick is quite slow. By pressing ENTER you may choose the position of an image you want to look at. Press ENTER once again to view that position.

One more interesting application was developed for Ruputer. It is called GMPVIEW. It allows to view images with 8 pseudo gray scales on Ruputer. First of all, you should take PC .BMP file with resolution of 102x64 and any color depth. Then you should convert it to .GMP format by using special utility which is included in GMPVIEW package. After that you will receive .GMP file with 8 pseudo gray scales. This program is very useful for viewing PC color and gray scale images. You can download it by following this link:

Bullet GMPVIEW (It allows to view multi-color and gray scale .BMP images on Ruputer by displaying them in 8 pseudo gray scales. This application uses its own .GMP file format).

Now there is an alternative to original .MMP viewer available. It is called Simple MMP Viewer. It easily replaces MMPVIEW application. The main goal of Simple MMP Viewer is speed. It loads .MMP files very quickly and exits by pressing any button. Go for it now:

Bullet Simple MMP Viewer (Good replacement for MMPVIEW application. Works much faster and exits by pressing any button).

If you ever wanted to take a screenshot from Ruputer application for its further publishing on your Web site, for example, this task can be easily done. There is a program called RupCapture which performs such job. When you loaded that application, there seconds (up to 59) are beginning to run. Press ENTER on desired time. RupCapture automatically exits and waits for specified time, then makes a screen grab from an application you are currently running. For example, if you pressed ENTER when the seconds showed '40', a screen grab will be activated after 20 seconds; if it showed '01', screen capturing will be performed after 59 seconds and so on. Note that screen grabs can be made not from every application. A screen grab is saved as .MMP file in RupCapture directory. The program can be downloaded here:

Bullet RupCapture (This program performs screen grabs from Ruputer applications).

The most amazing ability of Ruputer is the possibility of viewing video files. They have .MMV extension. There was no video player for Ruputer and Ruputer Pro in standard package, but with appearance of SII Ruputer Pro4, MMVVIEW application is on Ruputer flash disk and CD-ROM by default. So, if you are Ruputer or Ruputer Pro owner, you can download it from the Files/Ruputer Files section.

Text Works
When you were entering your data in PIM applications, you saw that Ruputer has some virtual keyboards which represent Japanese, Latin and other character sets including the icon set. But Ruputer has much more characters in its ROM. How they can be accessed? First of all, you should find HEX virtual keyboard (numeric keyboard with A, B, C, D, E and F letters). Then open one of your Ruputer manuals to access the character table (pages 176-189). Every character in the table has its own 4-digit code. So you have to type needed character code on HEX keyboard then press a button below space to force that character to appear. Typing characters from the table is not an easy work, but if you need Russian characters, for example, you will have to do it.

If you want to have Russian characters in Ruputer applications and files (.TXT, .CSV, etc.), you should use Baikal Wordpad program to convert Russian characters of Windows 1251 encoding to Russian characters of Shift-JIS encoding which is used in Ruputer. Download this program here:

Bullet Baikal Wordpad (This excellent text editor has the ability of converting Russian characters of Windows 1251 encoding to Russian characters of Shift-JIS encoding).

Ruputer's original text viewer TXTVIEW is very uncomfortable: it is slow, has very large characters and writes annoying 'Enter' character. It is not a good idea to use it as your default text viewer. There is a number of various text viewers developed for Ruputer. After the following reviews you can decide which one suits you the best.

One of the greatest text viewers available for Ruputer is Naiview. The best thing about this viewer is that it can be used along with your default viewer. This means that there is no need to associate .TXT extension with Naiview, because it has file selection box. Other great features of this viewer are the following: it can view binary files; the size of the viewed file can be very large, depending on the mode used; along with standard Ruputer mode (17 characters per line), Naiview has TEXT80 mode which is equivalent to PC standard - 80 characters per line (but the font in this mode doesn't become tiny - it stays the same, and you'll have to scroll a text by pressing RIGHT or LEFT to get all parts of a text); auto-scroll (this mode allows hands-free reading of a text - very practical feature; in this mode you can choose between 3 speeds of scrolling by pressing DOWN to increase and UP to decrease). Along with viewing of text and binary files, Naiview now can view encrypted files with .ENC extension. To encrypt a text file, you have to use PC encryption utility which is provided in the package. After running encrypted file on Ruputer, you will be asked to enter a password. If the entered password is correct, you will be able to view a text, if not - you will see trash on the screen. This application is compatible with both Ruputer and onHand. It can be downloaded from this location:

Bullet Naiview (The greatest viewer for Ruputer/onHand with the following features: binary, text and encrypted text file viewing; various display modes; file selection dialog box; support of large files; auto-scroll).

Another great viewer is FilerLargeTinyText, a modification of TINYTEXT application. The viewer can't view Japanese characters but it can display European characters which are absent in Ruputer ROM. The font which is used by this viewer is quite small but readable. FilerLargeTinyText has built-in European font, but it also supports additional fonts. Every font is situated in .MMP file, so it may be easily edited with any graphic editor. Currently, Russian (Windows 1251 encoding) and Greek fonts are available. To install one of these fonts as default, place the font file TINYFONT.MMP to SYSTEM/MMP/ directory. The size of the viewed file is not limited, but when you reach 16Kb, it then loads the next 16Kb chunk and you can't scroll back before 16Kb cut. Also this viewer has file selection box, so it may be used along with your default viewer. You can get FilerLargeTinyText and additional fonts for it from the Files/Ruputer Files section.

Another text viewer is quite extraordinary. It is called JVIEW. It allows to view small 'presentations' on your watch - you can view .MMP graphic files along with the text. If there is a line in a text file - FILE.MMP, by pressing ENTER, it shows that .MMP file. When you create a text, you can insert lines in the needed places with the names of .MMP files, so in the viewing process, a user will be able to execute those graphic files right from the text. Note that correspondent .MMP files must be in the same directory with a text file. Also, JVIEW has unique search function - press ENTER on the needed word, then press UP or DOWN to search that word in the text. You can create a table of contents at the start of a text file, so by pressing ENTER, then DOWN on those entries, you will be able to jump right to the needed part of a text. To use JVIEW, you have to associate .TXT files with it by using previously described FILER.INI Editor. To check all advantages and unique features of this text viewer, you should download Street Gang - Wheel Of Fortune presentation for JVIEW from Street Gang - Wheel Of Fortune Web page. You can download JVIEW from the Files/Ruputer Files section.

There was text editor developed for Ruputer. It is called SLED. With its help, you'll be able to create and edit text files right on your wrist. Download this text editor here:

Bullet SLED (English version) (This text editor allows you to create or edit text files right on your wrist. English version by Aaron J Miller).

If you need to take notes on the fly or keep track of your expenses, you should try Vortex application. If you want to write just a phone number or note, use text fields, and put zero number at the last numeric field. The last field is used for keeping the track of your debts, expenses, etc. Then, the numbers from all data are calculated and the final sum is written at the lower right corner. You can get this application here:

Bullet Vortex (Great quick note and expense manager).

Having more text files on Ruputer than flash disk capacity allows is possible now. You can store all text files in compressed form, then use Huff decompression utility to unpack them. To compress text files to Huff format, you need to use a special command-line utility for PC which is enclosed in original Huff package. You can get Huff and PC compression utility from the Files/Ruputer Files section.
